EPISTEMICITY OF WORDS DENOTING CERTAINTY / UNCERTAINTY

چکیده
The article explores epistemic nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs that convey different levels of confidence/uncertainty. material the study was a selection fiction texts modern English literature for 1 million words. nature words used to indicate certainty / uncertainty is studied. Epistemicity defined as property manifest properties calculated ratio number (EW) total indicating in according formula Eep÷Et*100%, where Eep uses word, Et this word selection. place EWs utterances considered were separated from non-epistemic ones. Epistemic adjectives, nouns occur affirmative, negative, interrogative object-determining before subordinate part statement. verbs interjections any utterance, marking it epistemically. EW are not past future tenses phrases with personal pronouns other than I, we positive you questions. We also impersonal expressions. cannot be adjacent words, discursive markers, action. analysis 28 showed epistemicity ranges 0‒95%, most think, seem, know, see. For 21 0‒75%, sure, impossible possible, certain, possible. Adverbs show highest level (50‒100%), among 25 maybe, really, probably, kind of, sort perhaps often. Nouns lowest range 0‒50%, 17 fact, feeling, doubt, idea, chance often used.

The Certainty of Uncertainty
I believe that industry requirements for software estimate accuracy are infeasible. This is because software development, like economics and management science, is a complex, non-linear adaptive system and as such any attempt to estimate project effort or timescales is likely to result in very inaccurate estimates. In my view, it is important to understand the nature of the uncertainty in estim...

Uncertainty of measurement comprises, in general, many components. Some of these components may be evaluated from the statistical distribution of the results of a series of measurements and can be characterized by experimental standard deviations. The other components, which also can be characterized by standard deviations, are evaluated from assumed probability distributions based on experienc...

Simon’s and Theil’s certainty equivalence property justifies a convenient algorithm for solving dynamic programming problems with quadratic objectives and linear transition laws: first, optimize under perfect foresight, then substitute optimal forecasts for unknown future values. A similar decomposition into separate optimization and forecasting steps prevails when a decision maker wants a deci...
متن کاملThe Function of Words: Distinct Neural Correlates for Words Denoting Differently Manipulable Objects
Recent research indicates that language processing relies on brain areas dedicated to perception and action. For example, processing words denoting manipulable objects has been shown to activate a fronto-parietal network involved in actual tool use. This is suggested to reflect the knowledge the subject has about how objects are moved and used. However, information about how to use an object ma...
